The Firm Clients Call When Winning is Everything

Four ways to avoid lawsuits and save money

There’s an old adage about business; if you’re in business long enough, you will eventually be sued. While many business owners can identify with that adage, it does not mean that your next lawsuit is already on the horizon. It basically means that given today’s litigious business climate, businesses should take certain steps to mitigate disputes that can lead to lawsuits.

With that, we offer several tips that can help.

Keep things in writing – Regardless of whether you run a service based business or sell goods over the Internet, the fine details of a deal should be in writing. Memorializing things helps parties remember certain obligations and help garner resolutions.

Maintain good communication with clients and customers – Customers and clients will not resort to litigation if they have a good relationship with the company. Where there is empathy, reason and good communication, disputes can be resolved long before lawyers are involved.

Pick your battles – The old adage about knowing when to attack and when to stand pat still applies in business today. A tough battle over a simple legal dispute may not be worth the trouble. After all, the more time you spend on a lawsuit, the less time you spend on your business.

Consult legal authority early in the process – Trouble may arise when businesses try to fight their battles without consulting an experienced business law attorney. Getting a helpful opinion from legal counsel could lead to time and money being saved.

If you have questions about other ways to avoid lawsuits, our business law attorneys can advise you.
